Held at the ITE College Central Aerospace Technology HQ, Singapore
Date: 22 – 24 September 2016

During one of my regular business trips through Singapore I had the pleasure to work my travel schedule around the Annual Model Engineering competition. This annual event is in its 10th year, sponsored primarily by Hobby Bounties, who are the Asia regional representative for Airfix.
Singapore has a very active modelling community that encourages the younger generation to participate in the hobby. Held in conjunction with ITE College Central Aerospace Technology, the three day event culminates in the competition finale held on the Saturday afternoon. This year saw 82 competitive entries in the three classes: Master Class, Senior Class and Interschool Class.
Although 30% of the entrants were Airfix models, the competition is open to any brand and scale of aerospace subject.
The standard of modelling across all three classes was astounding, with prizes for the top three of each class plus commendations in each class, along with special awards for individual efforts.
The college students took the responsibility of running the event, tabulating the computerized competitive scoring and preparing the finale visual presentation. All I had to do was ‘turn up’ and judge, which I found was a harder job than it sounds given the standards on offer. The youngest competitor was 9 years old and the oldest 75 years, both achieved a ‘Commendation’ in their respective Class.
Here are the top three results in each class (click on thumbnails to view enlarged images):
Although there were various individual awards and commendations in every class, it would be too much to share here, however one award of note was the Best Airfix.
I have to admit it is truly amazing what someone can do with that old 1:48 Airfix Buccaneer kit.
Looking forward to next year………..Hope you enjoyed.
