Here at Newark Air Museum, a registered charity, we’re already starting to make plans for our 2013 special events. 2013 is a significant year in the museum’s long history as it will be celebrating 40 years of being officially open to the public and we hoped that you might be able feature them in your event listing sections.
14 April 2013 – 40th Anniversary Gala
This is being hosted at the museum; 40 years to the date from when the museum was officially opened to the public by AVM Sir Ralph Cochrane KBE, the former Officer Commanding 5 Group Bomber Command at the time of the famous Dambusters Raid. {Normal admission rates apply}
One of the major aspects of the Gala event will see members of the Cockpit Opening Team opening aircraft cockpits that are not normally open to the public. This could include: the Vampire, Venom, NF14, Jetstream, Viggen and Draken. Some cockpits will be free to look in, and for those where visitors will be allowed to sit in a small additional fee of 40p per visit will be charged.

To support the Gala celebrations the museum is also running a free to enter photographic competition called ‘Favourites from 40!’
The competition is open to the general public and to museum members and aims to collect photographs from the past 40 years of the museum’s history. Each person can submit a maximum of 4 photographs about any aspect of the museum or feature museum exhibits / people, taken during the last 40 years (1973 to 2013); ideally one to be entered into each of the following categories.
Friendly | Factual | Fantastic | Funny
Entries can be submitted in printed format (7”x5” prints please) or JPG digital files. All of the entries will be displayed at the 40th Anniversary Gala event on Sunday 14th April 2013; and they will also be considered for inclusion in the RAF Winthorpe / Museum history project that is currently being compiled by the museum.
As an added incentive a series of prizes will also be awarded. The four best Visitor Competition Entries will each be awarded a Family Admission Pass that will be valid for one year and will allow free admission to the museum and all of its events. The four best Museum Member Competition Entries will each be awarded free museum membership for one year.
Application forms can be obtained from the Museum Shop or via email to enquire@newarkairmuseum.org
Further updates about this event, including a full list of accessible cockpits will be posted on the news & information page of the museum website at www.newarkairmuseum.org
18 &19 May 2013 – Tribute to the Lightning
An event dedicated to one of the most loved of all British jet aircraft, the English Electric Lightning. The museum is the home to Lightning T5 XS417, which was the first production batch of the T5 airframes. Visitors will also be able to get close and personal with the visiting cockpits of this iconic British fighter, (open to the public). {Normal admission rates apply}

Preparations already underway for Tribute to the Lightning
The initial preparations for the Tribute to the Lightning event, which takes place at Newark Air Museum on 18th & 19th May 2013, have recently been completed. This has involved the repositioning of the recently restored Lightning T5, XS417 into the area in front of the museum’s Display Hangar 1, which was formally occupied by the Jaguar T2A airframe.
In this new position the Lightning T5 has gained a fresh prominence on the museum site and it will also allow for the display of a range of temporary Lightning exhibits around the airframe.
In a separate move recently digitised footage of an interview with Roland ‘Bee’ Beamont is now being shown in the cinema area in Display Hangar 2 at the museum. This was filmed at Roland ‘Bee’ Beamont’s home in March 2000 and in the section of film that is being shown he recounts his time test flying the English Electric Lightning.
Date: 3 April 2013
Regular updates about the Lightning event are still appearing on the news page of the museum website at www.newarkairmuseum.org
15 & 16 June 2013 – Cockpit-Fest 2013 & Aeroboot aviation and avionics sale
