Initial assessment

This is a classic title aimed squarely at scale modellers and those that like, dare I say love the Supermarine Spitfire. In a nutshell this is what you get:

  • 144 pages (including 4-page gatefold indicating the differing features and components of each Mark)
  • Approximately 51,000 words
  • 96 photos of completed models
  • 32 four-view colour illustrations and
  • 37 individual colour profiles.

This is a book to assist Spitfire and Seafire modellers to complete any of the production Marks, from Mk.I to FR.47, with its appropriate components and in any number of suggested colour schemes. Also includes a concise history of the type – from the first to the last. How good is that?

More observations

Trevor Snowden is so well known by many who have followed his involvement with the Airfix brand over the years and meeting and chatting with him at the many model shows that he still attends. What I have always loved about Trevor is his boundless enthusiasm and knowledge – not least about the subject of this title, Spitfire Revisited.

The 4-page gatefold at the end of the book detailing all the different features of the different marks of Spitfire and Seafire will prove invaluable for anyone thinking of building a model of the type – this is very innovative and extremely thorough in its coverage.

I love the colour profiles that illustrate the camouflage and colour schemes worn by the many variants of the Spit and Seafire. With the high quality of the title overall in terms of presentation all the colour artwork and photos of models in many different variants the content comes alive with interest.

What do we think?

This book is about as practical and relevant as it gets for Spitfire modellers. It offers a goldmine of reference information and the profiles and models provide inspiration to go out and get stuck into your stash to create another classic Spitfire or Seafire. The text is very well written and informative as you’d expect if Trevor is involved and so I would thoroughly recommend this book and look forward to using it to inform a future Spitfire or Seafire build.
