In a nutshell, this is what your workshop is all about:
Ian is one of the best maritime scale modellers in the world – fact! And now you have an opportunity to work with him all day and learn from his easygoing, friendly and supportive approach that makes this session such an attraction. This workshop is limited to just 20 modellers.
It’s great to welcome back Ian who is offering a real treat for anyone who has some maritime modelling under their belt and wants to take their modelling skills to the next level.
Some of you will have attended Ian’s SMN workshops before and this is another chance to get a very practical insight into one of the newer skills in maritime modelling – laying real wooden veneer decks on your ship models.
The likes of Pontos and others are producing some incredible detailed super-detailed enhancement kits for a number of the popular maritime models by producing precision wooden decking and photo-etch accessories and this workshop will show you how to add these details – especially the wooden decks.
Here are some examples of what we have planned for your Maritime Masterclass with Ian Ruscoe workshop:
Wooden decks:
- the different kinds of wooden veneer decking and accessory sets featuring these products currently available
- Ian will be working with the Tamiya 1:350 scale HMS King George V and HMS Prince of Wales battleships
- how to get hold of and source these sets
- how to add wooded decking to your models and avoid some common pitfalls
- learn all the tips and tricks for successfully adding these super detail sets
- how to paint and or treat your wooden decking to create a highly realistic finish
- when to paint or treat your decking – plenty of tips on this key decision
- working around other delicate, detailed parts and how to avoid damaging work you’ve already created
Working with photo-etch (PE):
- sorting all your problems and issues working with PE
- adding PE to your maritime models will transform them and yet the process of working with PE can seem daunting – Ian shows you how to do it well and methodically
- bring your photo etch (PE) like a radar antennae and Ian will show you how to assemble it to create fantastically detailed models
Rigging 20th Century onwards warships:
- getting realistic-looking rigging on warships and other vessels often makes the difference between a good and a stunning scale maritime model and ian will show you exactly how to achieve the latter
- what material to use for your rigging and the options available
- how do you achieve a realistic rigging effect and yet not put too much strain on the supporting structures? Again, Ian has the answers!
Your wants and needs:
Is there anything you specifically want to know about these subjects? Let us know at the time you book using the registration form Comments Box.
How are the workshops run?
Plenty of demonstrations by your tutor along with skills practice for you! That means individual help and coaching to help you practice and develop your skills with tips and advice, all in a friendly and supportive environment.
Just ask anyone who’s attended one of our workshops – here is a selection of feedback from Ian’s last workshop day:
“excellent hands-on tutorial”
“there’s nothing like seeing what you imagine to be a really difficult job in real time to give you the confidence to try it for yourself with confidence that you will succeed”
“Ian responded to our individual needs and showed us, using our own models, how to solver the problems we’re having”
“something different for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it”
“very well presented, with plenty of attention to detail – fascinating watching an expert at work”
“Ian concentrated on the approach to bow-waves, using cotton wool – a very impressive effect – I can’t wait to try it!!”
“excellent; Ian very helpful – nothing like seeing someone do it live”.
What do I need to bring?
- any wooden veneer decks you have and want help or advice with
- ideally a section of wooden veneer decking and model that you want to work on during your workshop
- any photo-etc like aerial antennae, masts and so on that need to be folded and assembled
Here is some further info to help you get the best out of your day!
We encourage you to bring your own model and veneer decking and if you do:
- the hull will need to be painted as once wooden deck is in place you’d have to mask it to avoid getting paint on it
- if you bring your model prepared as above, only the kit deck parts of the main hull are required in place on the hull and nothing else, no deck fittings or superstructure
- the hull would require painting, so that on your day you can simply fit your veneer deck onto the hull
- Equally… you may just want to watch all this happening, make notes and learn from others – this is perfectly fine, it’s your day and you can choose how you spend it! Fine by us.
