Target project: Wingnut Wings Albatros D.V, 1:32 (you can follow the full build of this project in Aircraft-Build Now while it’s in progress and when completed just look in the Wingnut Wings pages in Aircraft-Finished Now).
Options
Inevitably you have a number of options when it comes to creating wood effects on your models and it’s worth looking at the other entries in your SMN TB for those.
What follows is a method that’s new to me and one I hope to master going forward but I think you’ll enjoy what follows as it takes you through each step in the process for creating what I think can be very realistic woodgrain finishes.
You’ll see above that the target project here is my Wingnut Wings 1:32 scale Albatros D.V. The full build takes you through everything before and after this stage of that project and so that’s why there are references to other stages in the build in the videos that follow, all of which are available in the build as well.
Ok, so what’s involved…
Wooden fuselage
Time to lay down the base colour for the wood effects and that’s Tamiya XF-57 Buff. Just before that the light grey-green metallic areas around the engine need to be masked with Tamiya tape.
Leave overnight to harden thoroughly and then a light buffing using 8000 grade Micromesh cloth or spongy polishing stick.
Woodgrain effects
This is a first for me using one of the new RB Productions photo-etch (PE) frets that have different woodgrain patterns etched into it.
Apologies, I meant to photograph the fret before using it but you can still see it well enough in the videos, even though it’s covered in paint here. I’m not sure yet of the best way to clean these things and I’ll let you know when I do.
