Sequel to the acclaimed Fire Force – Survival Course

‘A nothing-held-back account … a courageous work’

— Peter J. Benson, MD, Col, US Army Special Forces Command (Airborne)

Cocks has now left full-time service where patrols and contacts are backed up by helicopter gunships and the man next to you is a well-trained young conscript like yourself. Having demobbed and chosen a life in civvie street, he now finds himself serving as a stick leader in the Police Anti-Terrorist Unit, where the man next to him is middle-aged, too old to enlist but eager to shoot. The struggle then becomes a personal one as Cocks battles to reintegrate into a life at home with his young family. Drinking with comrades in arms is more familiar than bottle feeding and burping babies, making small talk with friends and family and being a husband. Again, Cocks is not unique in this private war; this too is a universal struggle for those who have served.

The Natal Mercury describes his struggle thus: ‘His examination of himself, then and now, is one of the bravest stories of war, the cruelty men can inflict on each other, and how difficult it is to come to terms with peace.’
