Airfix Avro Lancaster B.III ‘Dambuster’ 1:72

June 21, 2024 By Francis Porter 6 Comments

Interior first…

The kit’s interior is perfectly adequate in my opinion in terms of details, etc. Precious little will be visible when the fuselage is closed up.

The kit decals provide a pleasing main instrument panel and also a navigation chart for the table.

The interior painting is by brush and using Revell and Humbrol Enamels.

The fuselage transparencies were fixed in place with Micro Crystal Clear. When dry, I tacked the edges with cyano to ensure a strong and permanent fix. A wash and some dry-brushing was applied to the cockpit area.

The spars and internal structures had a good and positive fit.

The main fuselage halves are now fixed together and the seam lines remedied using both Squadron Green Putty and cyano/talc mix.

The framework sections for the main undercarriage have been added and these give good rigidity to the main wing spars.

Time to add the upper wing sections. Careful construction of the framework will ensure a good fit in the recessed locating channels.

The lower wing sections are now glued in place. The fit of the wings to the fuselage is excellent.

Time to add the tail sections. A couple of sink marks were repaired with the Green Putty. The elevators had too much of a gap against the fuselage for my liking so I added some pieces of plasticard to reduce it on both sides.

The rear fairing, weapon mountings and spin motor are now added. This view shows the excellent wing/fuselage fit.

The engine nacelles and exhaust shrouds are now assembled and fixed in place.

Just a little filler was used to take care of the joins with the wing sections. The fuselage windows are masked along with the cockpit and turret openings.

Another view and almost ready for a first visit to the Paint Shop for priming.

The two halves of the forward bomb bay fairing have been added along with the main undercarriage legs. The legs are multi part assemblies and proved quite fiddly to seat and install correctly. Once installed they are good and robust structures.

Hello and thank you once again,Rob.
    That’s much appreciated.
The primer is an absolute joy to work with even when used directly from the rattlecan.
The model’s ready now for the airbrush-painting which will commence with some tonal work on the undersides and look forward to updating again shortly.
    As Always,
    Paul.😉👍
