Wind Chaser by Raymond Way
This is a scratch made model of a fictional clipper ship which I have named “Wind Chaser” I got my inspiration from a Revell model of the Cutty Sark to get an idea of scale.

Made templates from the scale model and re-scaled everything to 4 times larger. I enjoy building replica models with the freedom to create my own design concepts, as you can see by the stern and aft of the model.

Finished size is 54” tall, 62” long, not sure what that is in mm. Being that I’m a cabinet maker by trade, I have decided to build this as an art piece, rather than being realistic.

I have used many species of wood on the project, which are all there natural colors, all clear coated. Also used a lots of brass, and fabric for sails.

This was a fun build, started it in 2007, but sometimes it has been on the back shelf for many months at a time. The rigging was the most time consuming for me, not 100 percent accurate, but looks good to me.

It’s the Italeri kit with the Italeri crew, Eduard Big Ed etch set, Cammett Bridge, Cammett gun shield, Cammett mines and Cammett dinghy. Also included are some custom made prop shafts, G-factor brass propellers and Master Metal gun barrels. It’s finished using a combination of Tamiya and Vallejo paints.
Just to finish it off it’s fully radio controlled!!!

U-96 Type VII C in dry dock by Nikos Kosmadakis
This is the Revell 1:144 scale U-Boat Type VIIC kit.
I have also used the Shapeways 3-D printed 1:144 scale U-Boat crew set that has 30 different crew figures, all with non-regulation headgear.
Take a look at the website for the figures – Shapeways.

U-Boats from Werner De Keersmaecker
When I first saw Werner’s incredible seascapes I had to make contact and he has very kindly agreed to share his photos with us so that you can see his work up close. There is so much to comment on like the sense of power and movement in the sea itself, the small lifeboat adrift nearby – take a look at the fine details in his work. Simply breathtaking and thanks to Bill C for drawing his work to my attention.

Thanks Werner and keep up your extraordinary work. G

U-BOOT VII-B (U-99) Otto Kretschmer by Ramir Dura
U-Boat Type XXVIIB 'Seehund' by Roger Brown
I came across ICM’s 1:72 midget sub second hand and thought I would do a quick build.

The assembly was straightforward with just the torpedo propellers requiring some care in removing from the sprue and subsequent cleaning up. Three grab handles made from thin wire were added to the hull and conning tower. Some lines were engraved around the torpedoes at the front and rear.

I found a suitable clear bubble from a spare missile tip, to replace the solid kit observation dome. The sub and torpedoes were sprayed with Humbrol gloss grey and then shaded with a lighter Medium Sea Grey.

When all this had dried, Klear was sprayed overall to protect the enamel paint. A wash of burnt umber oil paint was applied, followed by some paint chipping with dark grey paint

I added some rust stains by applying spots of burnt umber oil paint and then dragging them down using a dry brush. The model was then sprayed with a coat of Humbrol matt varnish.

A wooden base was made up, with brass rods for supports. A most enjoyable project!

German U-Boat by Mark Housley
This build started out as a quick MoJo re-energising exercise, I mostly model Aircraft with the occasional AFV thrown in the mix, so for a change I thought I’d go completely off the rails and out of my comfort zone and build a submarine, the main attraction being the total lack of parts so the build time would be very quick enabling me to get on with my favourite part of the Hobby the painting and weathering.

The build was pretty straightforward and for painting I opted to use the Lifecolor Kreigsmarine set number 2, U-boatwaffe and my advice is to only thin these paints with their own thinner. It went down beautifully and I would advise is to let it fully cure over night; it’s fragile and it chips really easily.

Ok once painted it was time to get busy weathering and rusting, I firstly sprayed the streaks down the hull sides using the hull colour slightly lightened then going a little darker here and there to give a random unevenness. Then Mig Light and Dark Rust streaking enamels. I did spray a little Future on the conning tower so I could apply the decals they were a little on the thick side but went down without any drama then a quick squirt with some matt varnish. Add a little more rust streaking and that was pretty much it, just flags and aerials wires to add, the flags are made with very very thin lead not the stuff you buy from model suppliers this stuff comes from rolls of lead I use in my every day job as a lead worker. The aerials are made using fine Easy Line and the insulators are small blobs of white glue painted to look like wood.

Hope you like it?

Just finished Trumpeter’s 1:200 scale Arizona; beautiful kit. Les was right when he said it was the best maritime kit on the market.
I’ve done mine in Dark Blue and Haze Grey as I read on the internet that documents have now been found that confirm Arizona was repainted in blue prior to the attack on Pearl Harbour. Hope you like her.

USS California BB-44 battleship by Ian Ruscoe
This is the Iron Shipright kit in 1:350th scale, I’d had the kit in my stash for a while and decided now was time I would build it. It would turn out to be a bit more than simply putting it together as this company’s kit are not very good quality in almost every way. Especially including castings on small parts, white metal castings (gun barrels).

The instructions are very poor, nothing like any other multimedia kits and the hull, and superstructure cast resin parts required a lot of clean up and filling (pin holes everywhere).

So basically, I replaced the main gun barrels with turned brass examples, a little scratch-building of small parts and replaced the etch bar cage mast parts with etch from White Ensign Models to correct kit examples.

Anyway, the finished project represents the vessel in December of 1941 just before that fateful day on Sunday December 7th 1941 where she was based. California was sunk in the attack but re-floated and repaired enough to sail back to US and be fully repaired and modernised returning to the fight in the Pacific.

USS England DE 635 by Ian Ruscoe
These are the finished pics of the model I was using at the SMN Workshop Weekend to attach photo etch parts to. It’s the Trumpeter 1:350th scale destroyer escort USS England as she was whilst serving in Pacific War.

Best regards

This is Revell’s 1:144 scale USS Frank Fletcher that I completed about 18 months ago. She’s painted in Measure12. I used the Eduard etch and scratch built the few figures out of wire and Milliput. A great kit and went together with no problems.
USS Guam CB-2 by Ian Ruscoe
Finally finished the 1:350th scale Trumpeter Guam, officially a large heavy cruiser of the Alaska Class, but some called them battle cruisers because of her 12 in main armament. They didn’t enter the War in the Pacific until 1944 and were used mainly as floating flak batteries for the carriers.

The model was built for a colleague who wanted a wooden deck fitting even though the actual ship’s deck was painted deck blue, he also wanted the kit stand used and two additional ship’s boats adding even though she only carried two.

USS Missouri – The Mighty Mo - by Uun Barliansyah
Here is my USS Missouri in 1:350 and as you can see from the photos I have added Eduard photo-etch additions.

USS Missouri by Ian Ruscoe
The model is Trumpeter’s 1:200th scale USS Missouri and was built almost out of the box except for an Artworx veneer wooden deck, Eduard etch for 40mm Bofors quad mounts and 20mm Oerlikons.

I also replaced and added some of the parts in the masts and ECM aerials which I scratch built that are on upper superstructure.

At over 50 inches in length it’s very impressive as to actual vessels and having seen one of these when I was in the States (modernised version) it was impressive.

USS North Carolina by Chris Flodberg
Finally finished this 1:350 Trumpeter North Carolina. GMM PE with Northstar details as well as some scratch-building.

USS Thach FFG-43 OH Perry Class Frigate by Ian Ruscoe
This is a heavily modified Academy kit in 1:350th scale.

I used the White Ensign Models photo etch detail set, replacement turned brass aerials, barrels and completely new SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopter.

I rebuilt the hangars from scratch.

US Navy Amphibious Assault Ship Revell kit in 1:350th scale
This is the Wasp, at the time there were no specific detailing sets available so I used generic Modern US Navy sets from Gold Medal Models plus some parts from “the spares box”. The figures visible on the model are also from GMM.

Vosper MTB by Mike Moore
This is my rendition of Italeri’s 1:35 Vosper MTB and crew modified to replicate
MTB 234. She is depicted making a fast getaway after a torpedo attack. A joy to build.
All the very best, Mike Moore

Send Us Your Images

If you have some pictures or two of your best, favourite or most recently completed scale models, then this is your opportunity to celebrate your work and show them to a worldwide audience...

Just a few pointers to help you though:

  1. Images need to be digital and sent via e-mail or you can Drop Box them to me at: geoff.coughlin@btinternet.com
  2. Images should be sent in a ‘medium’ size, JPEG format. If you are using Microsoft Windows, simply right-click on the image in ‘My Pictures’ or wherever it is stored and you should be prompted with the option to ‘send to’ and select ‘mail-recipient. A box opens asking what size you want to send the image. ‘Medium’ is fine (approx: 1024 X 768)
  3. I might not publish your pics if the image quality isn’t there or for any other given reason
  4. Please also include a few words with your pics to explain a little about: what your model is; kit; scale; any extras added; painting, weathering and finishing your model – maybe around 100-200 words will be fine. Thanks Geoff

So... please do send in your images. Contact-us now
