Background info
The GAF Jindivik, a turbojet powered pilotless drone or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in today’s parlance, was designed in the 1950’s by Australia’s Government Aircraft Factory (GAF). It was runway launched from a remotely controlled trolley, landing on a retractable skid mounted under the fuselage. While in flight the Jindivik was remotely controlled by a ground station and/or by a “shepherd” aircraft. The Mk.3 first flew in 1961 and 150 were procured by the U.K. where they were designated Mk.103A.
A further 33 Mk.4A’s were built exclusively for the U.K. and deliveries of these began in March 1981. These were known as Mk.104A’s in U.K. service.
The Jindivik was used as a target for surface to air and air to air missile systems until its withdrawal from service in 2004. In this role the Jindivik carried equipment such as smoke packs, flare packs and radar reflectors to enhance its visible, infra red and radar signature. In addition the Jindivik could carry a range of towed targets with similar signature enhancements.
