Revell Grumman F-14A Tomcat 1:144 – build review

August 18, 2020 By Francis Porter

Revell Grumman F-14A Tomcat 1:144
Feature Article with Kevin Ottens

A note from Geoff C…
Great to welcome Kevin to SMN and his first contribution of the small 1:144 Revell F-14A Tomcat – looks great Kevin!

With multiple releases of the type in 1:48 scale from Tamiya and AMK is great to feature a build in 1:144 scale.

Here’s how it all turned out…
Revell Grumman F-14A Tomcat 1:144
Over to you Kevin for your story on this one…

Small is beautiful!

After the Huey was finished I was waiting for the F-14B in 1:32 from Trumpeter. Coincidentally I saw this F-14A in 1:144 from Revell. This was the perfect kit to warm up to the fighter jets. The kit is really small, 3 Sprues and a canopy. For a 1:144 kit there were a lot of decals included. There are also 3 types of missiles. As I said, I was looking for something to do to pass the time, and this took me about 3 days.

Box art, I copied all the colours and used them in combination with reference photos.

The parts for the cockpit, 6 pieces in total.

The base of the cockpit is painted with Vallejo Model Color German Field Gray and dry-brushed with white. Naturally, the seats were also painted with Model Color black and Yellow Olive, and a dry-brush was applied appropriately.

Decals for the computers, clocks and gauges have been applied.

All parts put together. Right front view.

The decals don’t fit 100% nicely. Not even with a load of decal softener. All in all, satisfied with a 1:144 cockpit!

So between the fingers it is almost impossible to notice how the decals are pasted. It really turned out to be a beautiful area.
