Background

This is Airfix’s second iteration of this kit, the first being the initial anti-submarine version (AS.1/AS.4) which was released in 2023. I built this kit and a fully review of it can be found here in SMN. I really rated that and when the option came to build the second Carrier on Board (COD) version how could I say no.

Here’s a taster picture of the finished model along with the earlier release I built.
Airfix Fairey Gannet COD.4 1:48
The kit has 3 options, two later overall dark blue schemes and an earlier dark grey over sky scheme as used on the AS.1/AS.4. I didn’t want to do the same scheme and I thought a dark blue Gannet would sit really nicely with my early Sea King and FAA Buccaneer. I also liked the way the markings stood out against the dark blue finish.

Aftermarket Extras:

For the AS.1/AS.4 I pretty much built the kit from the box as there were no aftermarket items available at the time. Since then quite a bit has been released for the AS.1/4 but nothing for the COD version when I built it but a lot of the aftermarket is common to both versions. With this in mind I bought the below items for this build:

  • BIG ED PE Set: 49408 – contains interior PE, seatbelts and masking set
  • Eduard Brassin Wheel Set 648996.
