eduard P-51D-5 Mustang, Dai W build 1:48 – build review

August 5, 2020 By Francis Porter

eduard P-51D-5 Mustang, Dai W build 1:48
Full Review with Dai Williams

A note from Geoff C…
It’s great to see another of eduard’s impressive 1:48 scale P-51D Mustangs and thanks to Dai W for taking it on. You may have spotted that we have other builds too of this kit, so take a look at them in the usual place: Aircraft-Finished Now-Eduard.

Here’s a look at how Dais’ model turned out…

Nice :)
Over to you for the story on this one…

The subject of this project is the P51D-5 boxing of eduard’s excellent Mustang kit.

I have a couple of Mustang kits in my embarrassing stash of unbuilt models currently acting as highly effective loft insulation and so acquired the Mushroom Models book on the aircraft to help with building these. This book contains a comprehensive set of plans along with many ‘walkaround’ photos of preserved aircraft.

To be honest as far as this kit is concerned the instructions are excellent and so well detailed that no extra references are really needed. In fact, I’ll keep the eduard instruction sheet to help with building Mustang kits from other manufacturers.

There are several versions of this kit available and so some of the sprues are generic containing parts that are not needed for this particular version of the Mustang. These found their way into the spares box, perhaps to be used on another kit in the future.

The instructions provide a full colour painting guide and a comprehensive guide to positioning the large number of stencils that covered the aircraft.

Markings are provided for six aircraft. Care must be taken to select the correct parts from the sprues appropriate to the particular aircraft you wish to model.

I used the ‘Profipack’ edition of the kit which includes a coloured photo etched sheet and some masks for the canopy, wheels and identification lights.

The detail on the plastic parts is excellent with finely recessed panel lines and some very impressive rivet detail. Note that there are no rivets on the wings which, I understand, is correct as these were normally filled on these aircraft in order to reduce drag.

The Build…
