A note from Geoff…

It’s nice again to be able to show you a photo of Dave’s completed Skipjack-Class submarine right at the start so that we can all see how this project has turned out. Having seen the completed model at Telford, UK this November it’s certainly a model you can’t avoid! Certainly big in 1:72 scale and one that makes into an impressive finished kit. What I like is the way Dave has weathered his model, successfully breaking up that very dark grey finish and thereby creating interest. Nice work Dave although I can see how difficult it can be to photograph these large projects!

Let’s see how you got there…

Background info…

The USS Skipjack was the first in the class of US Navy nuclear attack submarines called after her. It was of a radical new design, with a hydro-dynamically optimised tear-drop shape. The performance was sensational, combined with outstanding manoeuvrability when submerged, and speeds of up to 40 knots were achieved.

Introduction

I have constructed this sub as USS Scorpion, which was sunk in mysterious circumstances with the loss of 99 crew in 1968.

Construction

Very simple with relatively few parts, but its large size does present its own problems in working with it.

We start with a quick check of parts – ok that’s done then! There are very few of them, and the construction is very simple, and with a little bit of care, a very nice, and impressive result can be had.

On with the build…
