Hasegawa British Phantom FG.Mk.1 ‘Treble One’ 1:48 – build review

October 13, 2017 By Francis Porter

Feature article by Gary “Biff” Vivian

A note from Geoff…
Really pleased to be able to welcome Gary to SMN and his first great contribution, the Hasegawa FG.Mk.1 Phantom II depicting No.111 San RAF “Treble One” in 1:48 scale.

I love this black scheme because it brings back such great memories of trips to many air shows back in the 1980’s and ‘90s. It was at RAF Mildenhall that I saw “Black Mike’ XV582 in the static park – a beautiful evening too and I shot the last few pics I had left on my roll of film – sadly not the best quality camera, but the best I could afford at that time. Anyhow, here are 4 of those photos that I think compliment Gary’s great build article that follows – hope you like them…

Over to you Gary…

Aftermarket used
• Aires cockpit, wheels and Spey engine set
• Meng missile set numbers SPS-043 and SPS-044
• Eduard ‘remove before flight’ printed photo etch tags and FOD intake covers
• Montex masks were used on the canopies.

Paints
• Lifecolor for cockpit and details
• Alclad metals and enamels on main airframe and missiles
• Tamiya X-22 clear to seal
• Windsor & Newton black, white and dark brown oils for weathering
• Final coat of Lifecolor satin clear.

The kit

The kit Hasegawa No. 07441 is, if I’m reading Scalemates right, dating from 1988, reissued in 2016 with new decals. First inspection has a fairly detailed cockpit (for its age) and restrained panel lines and riveting. The paint and decal guide for the kit on the box is included separately from the main instructions.

On with the build…
