Great Wall Hobby Douglas TBD-1 Devastator 1:48

August 8, 2012 By Adam Brown

Summary

GWH have produced another quality kit here but it isn`t cheap but compared to other new tool models it’s not far of the going price. There are some minor issues with it such as the unusable multi part canopy and the limited decal options but the general fit as a kit is excellent. The subject is a bit obscure and my not appeal to all modellers but it has filed a gap in the market as the old Monogram kit was looking a bit tired. Overall I`ve got to full recommend the kit purely from a modelling point of view and hopefully some nice aftermarket decals that cover some of those colourful pre-war schemes will be released in the near future.

The second part of this review covered the mask from Miracle Masks. These are a quality product which has had a lot of thought go into both their design and manufacture. The subject is unusual and gives the modeller a nice alternative to the kit decals. The instructions do seem little complicated but this is the nature of using masks and if you take your time and read them fully they do make sense. I especially liked the general instructions on the use of masks as these are clear and take a lot of the fear out of their use through the medium of drawings that talk you through each stage of their application. Again I highly recommend not only these masks but any that are made by Miracle masks, go on try them, they are a quality product that will take your model finish to a new level.

Plus points:

  • Quality of the kit
  • Nice interior detail
  • Fills a gap in the market as the Monogram kit is now quite tired.

Watch out for:

  • Poor fit of mutli part canopy
  • Limited Decal options
  • It is quite expensive for a 1:48th kit but that is the market these days.
