Geoff Here – 27 August 2010

September 7, 2010 By

Value for money? – just think about it…

I have just been to W.H. Smith and bought one paper copy of a leading scale modelling magazine. It contains 60 pages and of that there are 15 pages of adverts – leaving 45 pages of ‘content’. It contains 12 build articles/reviews spread over 36 pages of A4. The remaining pages cover the usual new stuff, listings and adverts.
The cost – £3.95

SMN is a scale modelling magazine that offers in-depth build reviews, feature articles, reviews of new stuff, books, CD-ROMs etc. It just happens to be on-line so that we can exploit all the technology available in that medium like:

  • Faster reviews – we get it, review it, build it and you see it – as it happens – no need to wait for a paper mag to be published
  • More build reviews and more reviews that show you what you can do ‘from the box’ without adding loads of extras
  • Feature articles that feature advanced modelling techniques, lots of extras and accessories for more experienced modellers
  • Zoom images
  • Unrestricted space limitations
  • HD video demonstrations (imminent)
  • Techniques Bank that shows you in detail How to achieve great results in your scale modelling
  • Access to a huge and growing Photo Reference Library (if you subscribe for 6 or 12 months)

But what do you get with SMN for one payment of £3.95 today…?

A month’s subscription that gives you:
55 finished reviews with an average review being 28 A4 pages long and containing 53 images – and rising all the time

24 in-progress builds – and rising all the time

163 completed reviews of new items (all with multiple images, many with Zoom images and an objective assessment) – and rising all the time

36 detailed, illustrated step-by-step techniques in the Techniques Bank – and rising all the time

1,400 images in 30 detailed walk-around-style sets in the SMN Photographic Reference Library – and rising all the time

Plus: all the usual regulars like: events info, reference and Free Samples of reviews and other stuff…

So, does SMN offer you value for money? You decide…

All new Techniques Bank

Really pleased to be able to “Go Live!” with your all new Techniques Bank.

As you can imagine this has taken a lot of work to bring it to you in what we hope will be a much more useful, organised structure. If you visit the new TB you’ll see that there are five new areas and these contain all the existing content, plus some new items that you’ll find helpful.

A reminder of what your TB is there for; to help you access:

  • practical help and advice on specific techniques used not just by me, but other members of the SMN Review Team and other modellers who want to send in their tips and hints
  • more than one way of ‘how to’ do something – there’s never just one way or ‘the’ way, just different ways and if we show you lots of ways, one should just do the trick for you. This is something that we will be growing steadily – I’m very keen on that
  • video demonstrations – this major benefit of subscribing is all but ready to go live and so it has its own area. Each video is designed to be focused and actually show you how a specific technique can be achieved successfully every time. These are available to all subscribers, whatever your level of subscription
  • well over 30 techniques there now – just waiting for you to click onto – click away

See you next week…
