Geoff Here – 4th March 2011

March 16, 2011 By

No rest for the wicked?

What a funny expression that is – I guess that by default that means I may have deserved the break we took last week as a family – I hope so. You know’ it’s sometimes not until you are away and then come back refreshed that you realise just how much you needed to take a short time out… certainly true in our case.

Big thanks to Francis, Rob and the rest of the team for going that extra mile to make sure all pretty much happened as planned – more updates and other additions to the PRL have seen SMN continue to grow well in all respects.

But it’s great to be back and there are many new updates and projects getting underway, so you should see an expansion of new builds over the coming weeks.

Significant developments on the navigation front

I am really pleased to report that one major development we have implemented as part of a programme of incremental improvements is Navigation. No Les, you can sit down, not the maritime variety, but how you get around SMN, navigation between areas.

Specifically you may have noticed that you can now go straight to your chosen location automatically after log-in, rather than being taken back to the subscribers home page. Technically this isn’t as straightforward as it sounds otherwise we’d have done it ages ago, but you can go straight to where you want to go now after logging in – just give your system about 10 seconds for the automated stuff to kick in. I hope that you’ll find it much easier to get started when you arrive on the SMN cover.
Speaking of which…

New buttons

Keen eyed amongst you will see that there’s a new Log-in button top right of the cover to make logging in more intuitive and easier. There’s also a new button for our visitors so you can go straight to the subs page and get started enjoying all the SMN has to offer.

We’ll do our bit, will you do yours?
Obviously I follow some of the web forums like many of you do too but I saw a thread about SMN on one of the well known ones in the middle of last month that I felt was a bit poor to say the least. I am not going to go into details here but I just want to say this…
If you spot any odd broken links or something within the SMN magazine that obviously looks like it isn’t working as it should then PLEASE tell me FIRST and I can do something about it.

Simply drop me a quick e-mail, preferably copying the link in the browser search box top of screen for the page you are referring to. We will sort it as soon as we are aware there’s a problem, but we can’t fix something that we are unaware of… SMN is huge – over 2,000 web pages with multiple areas, links and technically a very sophisticated website (that’s the first and last time you’ll hear me refer to SMN in that way!!!). It’s inevitable that the occasional problems will occur, but we can and will ‘fix’ anything if we know about it.

So, please make us your first port of call to flag up any problem – personally I find it very sad when people choose to go to another Internet website that has lots of followers and start moaning there without telling me first – come on team, let’s work together, I am sure we all want SMN to be a great success? Don’t we?
