Geoff Here – 9 July 2010

HD Video demonstrations – update!

Good progress continues and we eagerly await the final cut….

Airfix 1:48th Bf-109E-1, E-3, E-4 – in Here Now, but is it any good?

Earlier this week we received the new Airfix Messerschmitt Bf-109E from the manufacturer and the short answer to my rhetorical question above is – well, yes actually it is – very good in fact. You should read my full Here Now review to get all the detail but this is an excellent example of how Airfix has listened and acted on all the information available to them. Innovative – includes a Daimler Benz engine; Creative – it has 3 different spinners, two types of canopy and the Tropical filter to enable an E-7 to be created and lots of different bombs and stores. Affordable – probably half the price of similar products from Tamiya and Hasegawa. Keep it up Airfix and let’s hope that your De Havilland Sea Vixen and Lynx helicopters are in the same league – now is not the time to falter, the market is there for the taking!
Watch out for the full build starting very soon in Build Now.

Armour stuff…

Well here it is, Andy Argent’s stunning 1:35th GWH Flak 43 Schlepper – an amazing demonstration of scale modelling at the highest level – just get into Finished Now and read how you can achieve these great results. Speaking of which…
Bill Curtis is SMN’s new Armour Editor
Welcome Bill. Many of you will know Bill and not just for his epic work transforming an £11.00 CMK Pz.Kpfw 35t-1.35th scale kit into the inspirational work you can find in Build Now, but because he has talked to you at one of your club meets and shows. Always willing to share his ideas and techniques, Bill is exactly what SMN needs to continue our fundamental aims that are:

  • To help you develop your scale modelling skills – whatever your current level of ability
  • To show you how it is possible to achieve more pleasing results – and reduce your frustration when things don’t go so well!
  • To provide you with inspiration and motivation to achieve great results time after time
  • More techniques please…

More on the way here too in the next couple of weeks. Your Techniques Editor Andy Brown is working with the armour team to bring you much more in the way of armour techniques in your Techniques Bank. Andy will be taking a back seat from reviews and focus all his attention on developing your TB and so plenty to look forward to there.

What do you want? What would you like?

I am acutely aware that since we started SMN, I have been waiting for the right time to come to you and ask you about your experience of subscribing to SMN. Most importantly, I want to know what you think about the balance of subject matter we are covering. Do you have any particular projects that you’d like to see us cover in the magazine? So, I am putting together a short questionnaire that I will send each one of you to ask for what you would like and let’s see if I can tailor this mag to your needs. That’s the plan and if I can try and get more into SMN that you would individually like to see, so much the better.

Subscriber Gallery – what can you send me?

I am really keen to share the projects that you have built with others in SMN and so this is my invitation to you to send me a project you like, you’ve built and you don’t mind telling other s a bit about. All I need is:
6-12 images (about 1200 X 900 resolution) and about 100 words simply explaining what the kit is, any accessories added, how you’ve finished, painted and weathered it – job done. Just send them to me here at SMN: geoff@scalemodellingnow.com
Ok everyone, that’s it for another week.
Francis our graphic designer is away for a few days (he hasn’t had a day’s leave since we started SMN – no really he hasn’t!) and so you may notice that just week coming there’s a small lull in the updates but we’ll make up for that from next weekend when Francis is back and he finds his in-tray!
    Have a good week…
    Geoff
