When we launched Scale Modelling Now just over 2 years ago my vision was, and still is, to create an alternative approach to scale model magazines – take the magazine on-line and give much, much more to modellers for their subscription. Our intention always has been to offer great value for money and increase access to everything people need to know to enjoy the hobby, no matter what their starting point.
Sara and I are amazed at just how successful the first two years of the magazine have been and as we start our third year, we’ve made the decision to celebrate our anniversary with the very people that we launched the magazine for in the first place – YOU and modellers like yourself!
During 2012, we have a number of special celebratory events and offers planned. I am pleased to announce the first 3 of these.
Subscription offer
I believe passionately in SMN and what we are trying to achieve and I want as many modellers as possible to enjoy what we are all creating – a fantastic on-line resource centre.
The new 3 month offer is simple… a new rate equivalent to just £1 per month!
Yes, you did read that correctly – new subscribers over the next 3 months pay just £12 for an annual subscription (or the equivalent in your own currency). The aim is simple – to give the opportunity to as many modellers as possible to enjoy what we are all creating – a fantastic on-line modelling magazine.
So, for the next three months, one payment of £12.00 for the year (new Gold Subscription) will now give you full access to the whole of Scale Modelling Now – the lot!

- an SMN Junior Friends’ Gallery to support and promote younger modellers’ work (see below)
New look – better navigation!
You will see that we have a newly designed cover to improve the look and styling of SMN and the changes extend further, all designed to help you to get around SMN much more easily and intuitively. Here are some of the main improvements that have gone ‘live’ today:
- New cover
- New Contents page – this is in effect a new, streamlined amalgamation of: What’s New, Subscribers’ Home Page and creating a central hub from which you can navigate to pretty much anywhere in SMN
SMN launches Junior Friends’ Gallery
It has always been my intention to support younger modellers who may be new to this great hobby of ours and introducing the SMN Junior Friends’ Gallery is the start of some big plans that we have to encourage new blood into scale modelling.
We already have a number of new items to go into the SMN Junior Friends’ Gallery and these will go in over the coming weeks and months. If you know a keen young person who would like to share their modelling, point them in our direction – we’d love to publish their work.
Why not buy them the magazine as a present whilst the subscription offer is on? There is no better way of giving them guidance, showing them what’s around and sharing tips all in one place. As all us parents know, there aren’t many worthwhile presents you can buy young people for £12!

Our Google Analytics stats show that we have a really strong presence in the UK, USA, Australia and Canada – plus all our other friends from across Europe and the rest of the world. 117 countries last month alone!

Pay-as-you-go – to go!
From the outset there have always been a number of visitors to SMN that have only wanted to download individual reviews from Finished Now, despite the fact that a monthly subscription would allow them complete access to download all the reviews that we have ever published.
Given that subscription levels are such good value for money and for the next 3 months will be so low, we’ve decided to withdraw the PAYG facility from the magazine – it is costly to administer and doesn’t justify continued investment.
Thank you for your support and interaction with the SMN over the last two years. I am really looking forward to welcoming all our new subscribers to the magazine – come on in and enjoy the fun! After all, that’s what scale modelling should be about.
