Italeri Hawker Hurricane Mk.I 1:48

October 28, 2011 By

Review by: Geoff Coughlin (Oct 2011)

You may well have seen my recent Here Now in-box review; this was all done in double quick time, as we only got our kit ourselves towards the end of last week.

Initial impressions were very good and the SMN Star Rating given in that review reflects that. So, it’s time to see if the sprues live up to their promise in the build. Here goes…

Tubular Cockpit

Any cursory reference to the internals of the Hawker Hurricane reveals lots of tubular framework and Italeri has approached this in a sensible way, providing only what can be seen when you peer into the cockpit.

You can see from the pics that the nearly-complete sub assembly looks busy enough and compares pretty well to the reference images provided in the excellent photo reference book supplied within the kit.

The parts fit together well, although much of the frame has slight flash which needs to be removed. In fact, that’s a theme across the kit, with quite a bit of thin excess plastic plash around some of the parts. It’s easily removed with a scalpel and sanding stick.

RAF Interior Grey and dry-brush

The whole sub-assembly is sprayed with RAF Interior Grey-Green and, as I had a number of Aeromaster water-based acrylics to hand, these have been used through much of the build, including the interior colour.

One of the advantages is certainly that the whole build process is speeded-up with acrylics and I was ready to dry-brush the internals within the hour.

Humbrol enamel matt light grey 147 is good. See your Techniques Bank for how to dry-brush. Some areas of high wear, like the seat pan and backrest, along with the front edge of the seat pan received some extra silver metallic highlighting using Citadel Colour Chainmail.
