As I type these words at the beginning of 2026, the whole field of workbench lighting has been transformed in recent years, not least by the widespread introduction of LED ‘white’ light systems.
LED ‘white’ lighting is crucial for scale modellers for many reasons including:
1. Lighting gives you more accurate interpretation of the actual colours you are seeing when you are painting and working
2. Reduces eye strain by being bright and white, not yellow that was common before LED lights became the standard
3. You can usually control the intensity level (brightness) with a remote and/or touch controls on the light, allowing you to stream the exact level of brightness that you prefer
4. A multi flexible arm and head to adjust to the space you work in
5. A simple screw clamp attachment that attaches quickly and securely to the edge of working tables that have a lip
6. Mains connectivity so you aren’t using batteries.
This new lamp cost me around £99.00GBP and it is worth every penny in my view. It has all the advantages listed above as well as a couple of charging points: USB-C and A.
I have only had my light for a few days and it’s already proved an excellent light source for all the reasons stated. It’s also great for ensuring I capture good quality build up pics for all my SMN and book writing content – happy days!
