DiAgostini Model Space Thunderbird 2 – build review

Extended Feature Article with Mike Bristow

A note from Geoff…
To say I’m excited about this build would be a huge understatement – I love it already and that’s just in anticipation of what’s to come! No pressure Mike!!

I lived and breathed the original Thunderbirds as have generations since it hit our screens back in the 60s and 70s and over the years I’m sure you will have had at least one Thunderbirds craft in your hands – no mean feat for any manufacturer. There have been and you can still get scale models of Thunderbird craft, at a price, and now we have something very special – a huge, well detailed model of Thunderbird 2 (that just happens to be my favourite :) ).

Mike takes you through all you need to know and I’m so pleased to welcome him to SMN and this, his first contribution – and what a start!

Just before I hand over to Mike – check out this amazing video from You Tube and a whole host of others if you need the slightest motivation to build a Thunderbirds subject…

Over to you Mike…

Firstly an introduction to this kit

Available from ModelSpace in the UK currently by way of subscription. The options are 12 Parts (1 delivery per month) or 24 Parts (1 delivery every 2 months) allowing the customer to spread the cost as wished.

The cost of this kit (and all Deagostini/ModelSpace “Part Works”) has been and will continue to be the subject of much debate on social media so I will not say anything more.

The kits parts are all self finished in their correct colours and options for “weathering” are described in the supplied manuals. It is worth mentioning here that the build manuals are available as downloads in PDF format. Hard copies are not provided.

Pack 1

The Instructions tend to switch from one stage of the pack to another and back again. As this is something you need to adjust to while building it’s not something we will repeat here and the elements of the Pack are grouped together. Some stages are set aside for later and we will pick these up in latter Pack Builds.

Pack 1 (P1-01) consists of parts for TB2 nose, cockpit interior, one of the Elevator Cars and TB4 (The Yellow One).

The parts are contained mostly in clear formed trays which are snapped together at the corners. Care is needed opening these as they tend to snap open and scatter the contents. Larger (and some small !!!) parts are loose in the box.

Lets crack on with the build…

The Lore of Hostile Realms™

stasis-pod1

In that portentous year of 2054, Earth was visited by chance, by an alien race, soon to be known by the name Flexani. This unprecedented event in human history forever changed the way that mankind viewed the universe. Interstellar travel, once an unattainable dream, was transformed almost overnight, into an opportunity to indulge that most driving of human traits, exploration and exploitation of the unknown.

The First Contact with the Flexani and the following initial inter-species relationships, despite intial human fears, based in no small measure upon the influence of Hollywood, were positive as the Flexani expertise in medical techniques became apparent and were shared freely across the globe. As we all now know, cancer, AIDs and even the common cold were banished to the history books.
