Background and some decisions

When I was given the chance to build this one for the magazine, I jumped at the chance, the box art shows an artist impression of the vehicle painted in black with white bonnet stripes, the stripes are incorrect for a 1968 model, as they were not fitted at the factory until 1969.

Only two colours are listed for this vehicle in the instructions, red or black, neither of these colours interested me for this project, so I went onto the internet and did a bit of searching for reference material on the ’68 Chevelle SS. I discovered they came in so many other colours including some very nice metallic colours and so in the end I decided upon Chevrolet Grecian Green metallic which was ordered from my go to paint supplier when I’m building American cars, MCW Lacquers.

Before any build I always have a good read at the instructions to see if I can build any parts into sub-assemblies before painting them. I did notice a few colour call outs that are totally wrong for this model, section 29 shows the front grille and a trim that goes beneath it that calls out to be painted body colour, and also in section 33 where it tells you to paint the sections above the rear bumper in body colour, these are totally incorrect for the SS version. All these parts need to be painted in gloss black, in fact there are two decals in black that go onto the rear trim, so there’s no need to even paint those parts.
