Modelling

What first attracted you to Scale Modelling?
Airfix kits had it all for boys in the sixties. Then being nuts about aircraft and aviation as a teenager.

How long have you been scale modelling for?
I’ve been in and out of the hobby since about 13.

Specialist area of Modelling?
Aircraft. Mainly RAF, but recently finding more obscure subjects has been a priority, so moved on to FAA/RAAF/RNZAF aircraft often via US built planes that all these forces operated.

Preferred Scale?
1/48

What is your favourite real subject of all time (aircraft, armour, maritime etc)?
Aircraft without a doubt

The best thing you’ve ever built?
1/48 Albacore by Trumpeter (or is it ?????)

And finally: Most memorable Modelling disaster?
A recent build, the Airfix 1:48 Gnat. The incorrectly installed the front ejection seat, so that it sat way too high in the cockpit and the canopy HAD to be open, and on examination would never ever close! Luckily, it doesn’t show (does it?) on my subscribers gallery pictures.

Scale Modelling Now

How long have you been a reviewer for?
Since September 2025

What made you get involved with SMN?
Came across it while browsing for building/finishing info on the web.

What’s your favourite thing(s) about SMN?
Getting my pictures seen on the web! No, really, its about getting so much information and expertise in one place. Though its been a real buzz realising that my combinations of expertise, modelling (up to a point, still), photographing my models and especially dioramas grow into can combine into what might turn out to be a speciality?

Favourite SMN review?
Of mine….. the 1:48 Kingfisher by Monogram, though I wish it had been a fully documented build rather than a few random pics along the way. See the Subscriber Gallery entry

About You…

Sum yourself up in no more than five words.
Obsessive.

Biggest hobby/hobbies outside of Scale Modelling?
Aviation. Mens shed.

Favourite food/meal?
Lamb shank (on a plate) with red wine (in a glass)

Three famous people who you admire
Don McCullin, Robert Hardy and Heath Robinson

And finally…tell us a (clean) joke…
My IQ test results came back……they were negative.
