The Messerschmitt Bf 109 K‑4, introduced in late 1944, was the final and most refined production variant of the long‑serving Bf 109 fighter. Developed to standardise the increasingly complex G‑series, the K‑4 incorporated aerodynamic clean‑ups, a refined fuselage, a retractable tailwheel, fully covered main wheels, and the clear Erla Haube canopy. It also featured MW 50 power‑boosting and numerous internal upgrades, including a revised fuel system and instrument layout.
Production began in Regensburg in August 1944, with around 1,200 aircraft delivered despite severe disruption from Allied bombing. Entering service with units such as JG 4, JG 27, JG 52, JG 53, and JG 77, the K‑4 offered excellent climb and speed, though its impact was limited by overwhelming Allied air superiority in the war’s final months.
